Government Dental Programs

In Canada, general oral health care is not included in the Canada Health Act (CHA).  Most Canadians receive oral health care through privately operated dental clinics and pay for services through insurance or by paying for it themselves.

According to the latest oral health component of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS):

  • 62% of Canadians have private dental insurance;
  • 78% of respondents from the higher income bracket have private insurance coverage
  • 53% of adults between 60 and 79 of age do not have any dental insurance.
  • 50% of respondents from the lower income bracket do not have any dental insurance.

Some dental services are covered through government dental programs.  According to the latest CHMS, 6% of Canadians have public insurance. Below is a list of federal and provincial government dental programs.
